John Oliver asked for Donald Trump to run for president three years ago on The Daily Show and it's very strange to watch today

I won't lie, I've been laughing at Trump the entire campaign.

I've studied political history, all the old campaigns. I watch the stats, and I figured that there was no way that Trump would win the Republican nomination - let alone the presidency!

Even on election night, I was confident - I told my family and friends that he just won't win, the popular vote will be close but he won't carry the states that he needs to win.

I was spectacularly wrong. And while I can grumble about outside intervention, FBI bullshit, and continue harping on about the electoral college - I have to admit that Trump won. If Hillary had lost the popular vote but won the electoral college, I know I'd adamantly say that she won fair and square - even if I don't particularly like the electoral college.

The New Yorker is admittedly a liberal publication, but I think that George Packer's piece about Trump's support really rings true now and I think that my mistake was underestimating the amount of Americans who felt the way described in the piece.
