[Johnston] Further to Pierre LeBrun report, Valeri Nichushkin gets a $6.125M AAV on his eight-year extension with avs. Monster extension keeps Nichushkin from hitting the open market.

This might be one of the most high risk/high reward contracts that we have seen in a while.

Let's say his previous deal had 1 more year left, and he put together another season and playoffs like he just had, he is an 8-9 million dollar player in free agency. The risk is that while he is a player who was always thought to have a high pedigree, he is being paid off of a season where he almost doubled his career highs in points and goals.

One aspect is that the cap is going to sky rocket in 3-4 years once escrow is paid back. It won't be long until top UFA third liner wingers are making 6 million instead of the 3-4 million they make now. If he regresses, the contract won't be that bad. But they will need him to deliver for the first few years of it.
