Joseph Smith KNEW he was a fraud. Period.

Yes. To me it seems more like he believed that he had been called of God, and everything he did after was him telling himself that this was what God wanted. It doesn't mean that he actually was, it just means that he thought it was and just executed everything about that belief poorly. I've yet to see anyone present any real proof that he knew it was all made up, but rather a series of events in which he kept doing stuff and when it didn't work out, whatever voice he was hearing in his head kept rationalizing the next step. Joan of Arc believed she was called by God. Was she? Or did she just possess this natural gift at military planning? Throughout history, people have believed they were called by God to come greater purpose. But whether or not they actually were doesn't matter, because they believed they were, and they weren't purposely deceiving. But since leaving the church, I've only come to the conclusion that ex-mo's are butt hurt and look for every reason they can to be mad and continue to be mad, instead of, you know, moving on and being happy.
