Judge has blocked the start of San Antonio’s Sick and Safe Leave ordinance which was set to begin on Dec. 1

Ready for the downvoted, so here I go:

Good. This kind of ordinance should have gone to a public vote. While I understand not all ordinances should go to a public vote due to feasibility, this one has such an impact on the local economy that it deserves its day on the ballot box. Dictating terms like this with a small council isn’t democratic, it’s authoritarian. And while, yes, people voted for these council people:

  • Turnout for local election is amazingly low so these reps don’t fully represent their districts wants and needs (this one is on the voter)
  • Council people are not beholden to the district only to the voters

This was a play for national attention on the mayors part, seeing himself as the second coming of Castro, and has nothing to do with the people of San Antonio. Nirenberg is playing it up on the national stage because he wants an appointment in the next Democratic administration.

Finally, if you’re fed up with stuff like this, go vote! Out of the 772k registered voters in Bexar County only 89k voted. Out of the 772k registered voters in Bexar County only 89k voted. That is not how this should work, and mayoral elections are purposefully off year elections to suppress your voice.
