Ready for the downvoted, so here I go:
Good. This kind of ordinance should have gone to a public vote. While I understand not all ordinances should go to a public vote due to feasibility, this one has such an impact on the local economy that it deserves its day on the ballot box. Dictating terms like this with a small council isn’t democratic, it’s authoritarian. And while, yes, people voted for these council people:
This was a play for national attention on the mayors part, seeing himself as the second coming of Castro, and has nothing to do with the people of San Antonio. Nirenberg is playing it up on the national stage because he wants an appointment in the next Democratic administration.
Finally, if you’re fed up with stuff like this, go vote! Out of the 772k registered voters in Bexar County only 89k voted. Out of the 772k registered voters in Bexar County only 89k voted. That is not how this should work, and mayoral elections are purposefully off year elections to suppress your voice.
