This has been happening in California State prisons since the late 60s. The Hispanic prisons from rural Northern California towns felt like the Mexican Mafia was not helping them out so they formed the Nuestra Famila. To this day Nortenos and Sureno are all over California and beyond. Typically they stay on their side of the state but there are generally more Surenos in N. California then there are Northerners in S. California.

Prison is where they are often segregated but shit happens. For example, I did time in one of Californias FEDERAL prisons and quickly learned that Mexicans operated as ONE unit there as the federal system didn't recognize the two gangs. I was usez to be segregated from the Southeners in county jails and such.
