Just before a shooter killed 20 in El Paso, the NRA celebrated looser Texas gun laws

True, but the real problem is - where's the solution? The proper know-how and motivation, Australia legal firearms could be used just as effectively. I'm kind of the opinion their police might be better than ours though, because I read about illegal smuggled into country handgun and home-made (or machinist made selling to gangs) automatic weapon seizures semi-often.

Standard hunting rifles, if they were used in mass shootings, would even be far more devastating, yet we, just like australia, have sections of country where those are valid, needed land management tools.

One lobby's afraid of slippery slope, the other's providing effectively useless laws (assault weapon ban anyone? just because it looks scary....).

If you want to ban semi-automatic weapons, be up front about it (These are even relatively easy to legally get in australia)! Don't ban bayonet lugs, for example - what's the point? Who's charging people with a bayonet?

From my stance, there's been no real *discussion* about actual technical details and capabilities, and just ineffective waffling and counterpoints that are valid, because some proposals are just *dumb*.
