Just bought Morrowind, what should I know?

In its day, Morrowind boasted on of the largest maps ever created. By today's standards, the map is small. To make the map seem larger, there was lots of fog and an extremely slow walking speed.

With MGE XE, you'll want to go 3x vanilla fog max. Otherwise, you'll quickly realize just how small the map is. It ruins the experience if you can see Ald'ruhn from Caldera. (You might even consider playing at 2x vanilla fog.)

The walking speed... Either choose The Steed birth sign or use a mod to increase the default walk speed by 10%. I do both.

Fatigue. Fatigue. Fatigue. Keep your eye on that green bar. Use those green potions. Consider enchanting a constant effect fatigue regeneration ring.

If you are a marksman or archer, cliff racers are great. If not, cliff racers are horribly horribly annoying creatures.

A brief synopsis of level 1 combat:

Swing. Miss. Swing. Miss. Swing. Miss. Paralyzed. Re-load from save.

Morrowind is a story game with combat. Unlike Skyrim, it is not a combat game with a story. Morrowind has a plot-driven narrative and unfolds like a good book. Skyrim is more like the movie.

If you want a player home, you are going to have to take one or advance deep into the game before acquiring one. (Hint: Take one or hookup with a guild.)

Dice rolls. It's all dice rolls. Think KOTOR but without the floating numbers. That's to hit and for damage. (The swing and miss sound could be better.)

The game starts off slow. Your character starts off weak as a bunny fart. The locals will be mean to you. At some point the game will grab you and not let go of you. As you continue to play, unlike the other 3D games in the series, your status and experience legitimately changes and it is quite rewarding.

As far as class or race, pick whatever you want. There's a learning curve. You are likely going to end up re-rolling a new character anyway. You won't know what you want to play until you play. You are going to eventually max out every skill anyway. Even weak characters will eventually end up godlike, but unlike in Skyrim, you will feel like your character earned it.

Enemies aren't leveled. Your character is not the center of the universe. Morrowind does not care about you. Want to be a hero? You're going to have to earn it.
