I'm 21 and just started back up collecting about 3 months ago. I was a 90s kid and was swept up by the Pokemon craze just like everyone else. My first great pull was Lugia first edition from Neo genesis. I ended up trading it for my friend's Charizard first edition from base set. He had three of them that his dad bought him for his birthday that year and he really wanted my Lugia. I ended up trading my Lugia for one of his Charizards and a holo unlimited Alakazam. I distinctly remember his dad really not wanting his son to do the trade, but his dad ended up letting him after weeks of bugging him. Part of the reason was because my card was in played condition and his card was mint because he always kept it in a top loader. I had no idea of the value of that card until about 5 years ago and then I started looking for it, but I could never find it. It still kind of bugs me, but I was a little kid at the time and I don't really blame myself. Honestly, it probably got thrown away when my parents clean out my toy closet.
