I just don't get it - 'Descendants of the Sun' Korean Drama Mania: Thai PM Calls It 'Patriotic,' Taiwanese Fans Demand Happy Ending While Chinese Government Warn Citizens

I watched the first episode just to find out what all the fuss was about. After 20 minutes into the show I had to turn it off, it was nauseating. The women seem to like it, the guys seem to hate it with a passion though. I look at the viewers in my family and others, and it's all women. Another melodramatic crap. The English language parts were just horrible as always, as that part has always been a weakness in Korean dramas. The foreign actors playing foreign characters don't know how to act, since they are not real actors. On the other hand, Korean actors who act OK in Korean language parts, all of a sudden turn into zombies who end up reading scripts as soon as they start speaking in flowery English vocabulary. They all look like they're terrified and frigid when speaking in what is obvious a language that they have never spoken as an everyday language. They have zero nuance of the language. Koreans who have thick accents do not speak English like this in real life, it would have been better if the producers had shown these characters as speaking struggling Konglish instead of pretending to be characters that are expert English speakers. This always doesn't turn out well, a lesson that Korean producers in movies and dramas just don't get, blowing a big hole in the credibility of their work.

English problems aside, this is just another romance drama with the same old tired formula. But my biggest pet peeve is that the show's producers did everything they could to satisfy China's censorship. So in essence, Korean dramas are now beginning to be under the shadow of China, where the shows must get preapproval from China's censors before they air even in South Korea - unheard of and another act of selling out your soul for China money. What a disgrace.
