Just got downsized, what the hell do I do next?

We've been through this, too, and we had just one income. It will be okay. First things first...

1) Read through all of the paperwork you received when your position was eliminated, and make sure you understand it. If not, call HR for clarification.

2) If you had insurance through your employer, enroll in your spouse's plan immediately.

3) Apply for unemployment. Because of your severance, you may not be able to collect it immediately, but you should get the ball rolling now.

4) Get an handle on where you stand with your household finances.

5) Update your resume, Linkedin, etc. and investigate whether or not your employer offers any placement services. If so, take advantage of them.

6) Exercise and get enough sleep to reduce your stress level.

7) Start your job search and plan to work harder finding a new position as you did maintaining your old one. Finding a job is a full-time job!

8) Keep excellent records of any and all contacts you have with potential employers. You will need them to maintain your unemployment benefits.
