I just watched episode 1 of Season 10 at NYCC. AMA. [SPOILERS]

For me, while the series is equally about the relationship as it is about any of the wider politics, it's still more political than it is religious, and even when it's very philosophical, that's often connected to political philosophy in a way. But yes, it certainly always transcended partisan politics in the past. It was never a question of supporting or opposing a certain party or candidate- I am using those as examples of the political philosophies they (purport to, at least) represent. Sanders and Trump both have anti-elitist rhetoric that is unusual (and in Sanders' case is at least somewhat backed up by his record) for a potential major-party candidate. Whether that rhetoric would actually be enacted if they were in power is another matter. But in any case, these politicians do advocate a worldview that is more compatible with The X-Files worldview than say, Hillary or Jeb. That being said, there are extreme differences between the rhetoric and proposed policies (and probably the personal beliefs) of Sanders and Trump, despite the fact both see an "elitist global conspiracy," if you will. This is down to the philosophical differences between left (Sanders) and right (Trump). The difference between left and right is always nebulous and changeable in different contexts, but still, such differences exist in any country, and my question was exactly about my fear Carter may have tipped his hand too much one way or the other. Of course, it would be disastrous for me (or any viewer) if he decided to make the show extremely political in a partisan way going against my personal beliefs (more left than right, btw) but it might also be disastrous artistically if he tried to turn the show into a piece of propaganda for my personal beliefs. In any case, I am very curious about which one he chose, and I would be even if I wasn't going to watch the revival, because given the publicity it will receive, it is likely to define what "The X-Files" is perceived to mean today in terms of politics, so if, say, Carter decided to make the show a Trump-like xenophobic screed idealizing right wing talk show hosts, that would mean every time I say I'm an X-Files fan (which I might actually have to stop saying!) I would have to explain "no, no, I'm not THAT kind of X-Files fan."
