I just want to write a post venting about how hard it is to be a person on a budget who loves to cook with fresh ingredients

SNAP is a complicated system with outdated rules that vary based on the state interpreting the federal rules and the sitting president's directives regarding how to interpret the rules.

The comment I'm replying to (gross income is the metric used vs net) is 100% correct but there are some expenses that may be countable depending on your region and circumstances. Generally its only housing/utilities over a certain percentage of your income (up to a capped maximum), but there are some additional countable expenses for elderly, disabled, and homeless individuals. Oh, and child support expenses are also something that might be considered if court ordered.
