Justin Trudeau moves forward with ban on LGBT+ conversion therapy across Canada

I’ve attended Evangelical churches for thirty years and married into a family that turned out to be pretty fundamentalist. When I went to my in-laws house and saw all of their magazines about Israel I thought “so these are the people who read those”.

Over the last three decades, I have not once heard of anyone in real life who practices, endorses or has anything to do with conversion therapy. The only place I hear about it is the Canadian media. The sad reality is that most LGBTQ remained quiet about it until they left the movement.

These days, more stay but the emphasis in church has focused on glorifying singleness (both gay and straight) because more people in the church and society are living alone. We had a big conference on singleness this fall.

The LGBTQ issue doesn’t come up very often in church, it is only mentioned about six times in the Bible so it would be weird if it did. Quite frankly, the media mentions it more than anyone. Still, when the issue has come up, I can’t say I’ve heard a terribly good sermon on it that strikes the right balance between the traditional view on the issue and modern sensibilities. Recent sermons have basically been somber (tearful) statements about how they are sorry they still have to call this lifestyle a sin. I’ve told my family several times that if they can’t come up with something better they should probably just stop talking about it.

At any rate, that is about where things are at with this issue in the church. I’m not sure who or how many people are running conversion therapy things in Canada but I don’t know anyone who is worried about it being banned.
