*Karl Marx stares into the camera*

Yeah. I feel so disconnected from my generation (X) in that regard.

The funny thing is that GenX is in some ways more connected to the values and gestalt of the 60s than, say, millennials are. We came of age in the shadow of the sixties, and felt malaise as subjectivity was replaced with objective materialism. From a GenX perspective, millennials seemed much more bought into consumer and capitalist culture, for example. Many of the narcissist, self-interested tendencies that we take for granted in modern culture would have been seen as laughably uncool for 20-30 year old genXers. Familiarity with left wing deconstructionist thinkers had a cache to it; the very notion that people would seek followers or talk openly about businesses that would stimulate such behavior was seen as pretty douchey by that crowd.

Yet, years later, so many of my peers seemed not to have developed the insight that the boomers on the left, who created the values they admired, had actually betrayed them.
