I don't think it's about her "realness" ruining the escapism of the show as much as it is that her "normal" is microaggressions and racism making people dislike her... I'm not saying she's a raging racist or an evil person or the most problematic lead EVERRR but she is definitely showing her ass a bit and rather than apologizing, learning, and moving on, she's digging in her heels about how she's not racist she's just qUiRKy. Like, most of us are quirky in one way or another, but we're not all doing things like saying we thought Marie Kondo's last name was "maulwfondo" or whatever she said, or agreeing with someone who says "oh I just call her 'that Japanese cleaning lady,' her name is so hard to pronounce!" (Just as a recent example)
