I keep hearing how private school teachers get paid significantly less than public school teachers- how true is this?

It depends on where you live and how many good private schools are in the area. I live in the suburbs of a major city where the cost of living is high. On top of having good public school districts, there are many private school options that are "well known" in the area, making it a competitive market.

I work in a private school and make the same as a public school teacher with my credentials and experience, but I get perks that my public school counterparts do not.

(Disclaimer: Please don't take this as a brag, just sharing info). Our classrooms are "fully funded," and as teachers, we rarely buy supplies out of pocket. We get 2 weeks off for spring break and are paid the same salary over the summer. We also get great benefits, free gym membership, and free catered lunch each day. I realize that this is not the norm, and each school (particularly each private school) is different and be able to offer perks to compensate salary.
