I keep thinking that since seemingly a lot of people (generally public) are struggling financially to put food on the table, we'd stop purchasing unnecessary items, minimize spending and help curb inflation sooner. But I feel like I'm wrong?

I think that the general public is a convenient fiction when you're talking about things like how people spend their money.

Nike shows a picture of hundreds of people lining up to buy expensive shoes. NPR talks of people needing food aid.

Meanwhile, I'm one of the millions going on as usual because the biggest change that current prices have induced is that I'm eating more chicken for breakfast than eggs. No one is talking about me because it's not that interesting.

People in general do seem to be spending less at the moment (retail is down year over year two months in a row), but I'm not making any bets as to whether that's because of rising prices or fear of a recession m
