Kick layering technique? Having so much trouble with this.

First off, thank you for the file. You've broken it down way better than most threads I've read on here! I liked the kick and I'll be studying it. Something you taught me was how to get a stronger punch - how'd you find it? I feel like I would've just swept a bit and then notched it in that area, but as I swept with what you used, it was obvious to me that the "punch" was gone bc there was either too much sub surrounding it or not enough, I assume.

In my own example (and I'll PM you a clip of the track I made in context), I wasn't trying test how close I'd get to the links posted, because to my ears - they both sound heavily distorted. I can seem to make round subby kicks with some punch, but some of the kicks I like sound really blocky and distorted - and sorry this isnt the best example, bc I extracted it directly from a song:

Hope you get what I mean by it. The kicks also tend to hang back in the mix somewhat which I wonder has to do with the decay or EQ.

I did some experimenting and it seems like the drive would have to be turned up to about 20-30, while messing around with the depth.
