Do kids in US schools really dissect frogs in class? What are they suppose to learn from this ?

In my AP Bio class (college credit if you get a high enough score on the end of the year test) we dissected Rats (male and pregnant females), frogs (male and fertilized female), crows (male and female), fetal pigs (male and female) and some fish I cant remember what kind of. It was insane, we spent like 2 months dissecting things and the lab area smelled of formalin for the rest of the year. Thankfully the classroom and lab were separate, but it was so strong I can still smell it when I think about that class. The worst part I remember was getting the chest plate (keel) out of the crow without mangling the rest of the internal organs. That sum bitch was stuck in there hard, and the scalpels we were using were so dull by that point the teacher ended up grabbing and ripping it out for us.
