Kids who succeed academically deserve scholarships more than kids who are good at sports.

Personally I don't see a problem with sports scholarships as long as a student has also met the necessary academic requirements to enter into university. I do though understand the argument where a student is given a sports scholarship even though they've done poor academically and they only got into college or varsity on the basis of the sporting proficiency.

My girlfriend's cousin got a scholarship to complete her studies at university. Her cousin is a really good rugby player and has represented her country in one or two games. The only problem I had is that when she got accepted by the company handing out the scholarship they never checked her academic history and only looked at her sporting achievements. Reason I mentioned that is that she has consistently failed modules on varsity, taking others in the next semester to make up credits for the ones she lost. Her entire year has been pushed back since she also failed an entire semester. This is before she got the scholarship. They are paying for her masters next year and once done she is guaranteed a high paying job in government.

Like I said above I have no fuss with a student getting a sports scholarship, it gives a student who might have not otherwise been able to afford college a chance to get in. But the example I mentioned is just the wrong way of doing it.
