I personally feel that you've summed up over 10 different individual episodes in one paragraph. It's too much of a narrowed opinion when you consider that each episode is at least one hour in length and each is a varied subject matter. I didn't reply for over a day because I genuinely considered your response and took the time to rewatch a couple of different episodes. If you're deciding to describe this series as science fiction then maybe you could review it as if it actually science fiction, instead of reviewing it as alarmist politic propaganda. You seem as though you took great offence to this series, yet at the same time brush it off as a work of fiction.
I think you're summing up too much of the target audience as stupid if you expect everyone who watches it to have their 'mind blown' or watches it and has their mind overruled with subversive political messages. Like you said yourself, it's a work of fiction and should be treated as though.
Each episode should be treated differently, as though an individual piece of work, especially considering each tackles a wildly different subject matter and each employs different subscribers to complete the final piece. You can't sum them all up in the way you did because that's tarring them all with the same narrative brush that you wield. Have you genuinely watched every episode from each series? Or have you chosen your own narrative based on your own view of Charlie Brooker?
I took extremely seriously your view that this is "third rate science fiction trash". I enjoy science fiction and originally watched this series because I thought I'd enjoy the elements of science fiction, especially in episodes that seemed completely detached from any kind of narrative related to current UK life. Am I still politically subverted because I enjoyed the sci fi elements of some episodes? And if that makes me an idiot can you please recommend me some better sci fi TV shows to watch, because if you can I'd be extremely grateful.
I think you're reading too far much into this series. Maybe it's because you're American and need some greater narrative in what was a very well executed TV show. Is it hard for you to grasp that a TV show can be enjoyable without some greater meaning? Charlie Brooker is not a genius, and he is not masquerading as a genius. He isn't trying to subvert anyone and this plain to see if you read any of his written newspaper work. He's simply stating his views. People happen to enjoy these views so he continues to state them. Maybe things are different in the US, but in the UK we enjoy this freedom of speech and no one is in a rush to boycott it. Similarly I would never boycott someone with opposing beliefs. Speak freely and if I dislike it I will simply ignore it.
Also your point about him calling Donald Trump a bell-end, I couldn't help but giggle. It's a very common turn of phrase, especially used in the north of England, please don't take it too seriously. If my brother is acting silly I'll call him a bell end. If my friend is chatting shit I'll call him a bell end. If my friend is exaggerating something to impress a girl, I'll call him a bell end. I full heartedly agree with him in this respect, and at the risk of being down voted to hell due to this sub, President Trump is a bell end. He chats shit in his speeches and makes up lies to drum up support. This isn't much different to most politicians, but they're all bell ends. Trump is no different.
