This kills this sub’s narrative

This take though completely ignores the possibility that challenges in-and-of themselves ARE fun. Challenges encourage you to play non-optimally and add variety to your gameplay. E.g., if I wasn't grinding attachments in CoD, I'd never use anything other than the "meta weapon" that guarantees my highest chance of a win / kill streaks.

And this isn't some new, post-Fortnire phenomenon from "those ADHD young'uns, back in my day we played games to have fun!" Sid Meier said over a decade ago that "players will optimize the fun out of the game," and that it's a job of developers to "protect" us from doing so.

Now, you may be totally intrinsically motivated, and you can force yourself to use a blue SMG in Destiny instead of your exotic "just for fun," but many, many people AREN'T wired like that. And a good challenge system helps. That's why it's important.
