I strongly disagree with your assessment that terrible CGI sequences are Indiana Jones material.

First, there should be no (or extremely limited) CGI—Indiana a Jones is about practical effects to a fault (melting claymation faces are superior to computer-animated stern alien faces).

Second, I think its completely unfair to characterize Raiders or Crusade as being rife with the same level of physical impossibilities in the action sequences as Skull. It's far easier to suspend your disbelief for Indy magicking out of a train car (or even an atomic bomb) than it is to accept, during a high intensity chase scene, for minutes, that it's even remotely possible 5o plow through the jungle at high speed. If they had burst through one sheet of trees, that would have been acceptable—but the damn scene goes on for minutes of hideous CGI with physics so stupid as to lower the gravitas of the whole film. Nothing in Raiders or Crusade was remotely so cockamamie as that particular sequence.

And my problem with the ant scene isn't the concept, it's how shitty it looks. The CGI is garbage. Even if it came out today using top-end talent, that scene would still look garbage. There's no way to animate ants like that in a convincing manner—maybe that's due in some part to the public's ignorance of any death, but in any case, it's a laughable effect that took me way out of the moment
