Kroger asks customers to quit openly carrying guns in stores

In some states, Kentucky for sure, the laws surrounding the use of deadly force is different between defending yourself, and defending others. If you reasonably fear for your own life, you can use deadly force to defend yourself. But to defend others, the laws are more strict. If you believe someone else's life is in danger, and you use deadly force to protect them, but it turns out you were wrong, you can be charged with manslaughter. So if someone threateningly points a toy gun at your head and you shoot them, you're legally protected, but if someone threateningly points a toy gun at someone else's head, any you shoot the person with the toy gun, you can end up in prison.

The best thing for anyone to do in a mass shooting situation is to run away from the sounds of gun fire. If you're trapped, the next best thing is to hid. If you can't do either of those, then you should fight back. Off duty cops, current or ex-military, and maybe a few people with hero complexes might try to stop a mass shooter, and possibly a few people who genuinely value the lives of others over their own. But any rationally thinking person with a concealed carry permit is heading the opposite direction when they hear gun shots, it's safer for everyone involved if fewer people stay in the area. Now if it's a school or church or something like that, maybe more people would choose to help, but most of the time, the best thing to do is run.
