KUER, Lee Hale: Mormons lament the lack of more female speakers in conference. (commentary: if women's remarks were represented by Joy Jones, then that was quite sufficient.)

This is why hard-line anti-mormons are just as bad TBM's the way they're willing to stretch as far as they possibly can to back their side. One thing you can always count on with extremist perspectives is that they're narrow and overblown.

Joy Jones:

Listen to the words of Elder Bruce R. McConkie nearly 43 years ago:

“As members of the Church, we are engaged in a mighty conflict. We are at war. We have enlisted in the cause of Christ to fight against Lucifer. …The great war that rages on every side and which unfortunately is resulting in many casualties, some fatal, is no new thing. …Now there neither are nor can be any neutrals in this war.”

Today the war continues with increased intensity. The battle touches us all, and our children are on the front lines facing the opposing forces. Thus, the need intensifies for us to strengthen our spiritual strategies.

she went on to state there would be real casualties in the religious war. It was a blatant minimization of the recent spate of suicides resulting from the depressing theology and its hard edge implementation.

Spirituality and warfare is an old, well worn metaphor regularly used to analogize 'spiritual death' and 'physical death', but that wasn't where she was coming from, no, she chose a quote from 43 years ago to blatantly minimize recent suicides. Serious? Suicide is a tragic thing, but IMO this contortionist effort to shanghai these tragedies into Jones-hate is actually diminishing, while Jones' talk intended no connection to the subject. You want a conference quote dismissing suicide so bad you can taste it.

The truth claims may be false, but this is just an example of how people hear whatever they want to hear. Mormons and confirmation bias is a substantial phenomenon, but obviously leaving mormonism behind doesn't have to mean leaving confirmation bias behind. There's plenty about the church to complain about, you don't have to make it up - truth is stranger than fiction.

4blockhead:

If this is the best that female leadership within mormonism can offer, then I'll take the talks about the fine points of mormon deity any time, no matter how boring. I only wish the unhelpful, anti-christian views represented by Jones (and formerly Julie Beck) could sit with their mouths closed.

So more women should speak, but only if they agree with you? That might be the same logic that was used to choose Joy Jones for leadership in the first place. Welcome home brother, between this and your ability to hear what you want to hear, you might find you feel right at home in church.
