KUOW - Seattle looks at new ‘poverty defense’ for misdemeanors

Hopefully, this doesn't turn out like Prop 47 in California.

I just moved back to Seattle after seven years in the Bay Area. They downgraded theft of anything under $950 in value from a felony to a misdemeanor. The homeless walk into stores and openly shoplift from small mom and pop stores. As long as it is less than $950 they basically get a slap on the wrist. Car thefts have gone up as well. There were several folks that had their cars broken into multiple times. They either had to pay the repairs themselves each time, or their insurance covered it but then their premiums went up costing them more in the long run. These folks weren't rich techies. They were low-income folks in the Tenderloin barely making it month to month as it was.

I don't think people should be punished for being in poverty but sometimes well-meaning changes without a fully thought-out plan on how it will affect everyone can cause unintended consequences.
