I know a family that had a battle with leukemia here in the US. Even with good insurance it cost them well over 2 million dollars when all was said and done. Here in the US, adults over 30 normally accept reality, save their families financial future, and eventually go to hospice... but with children and youngbadults families normally leverage everything to afford the "luxuries" of advanced treatments that private insurance refuses the cover, ie won't cover for various arbitration circumstantial reasons.

I guess as an American it is important to remember that medical insurance companies are not running a charity and have to thinking about their shareholders. Don't make the mistake of assuming that just because you are paying for supposedly comprehensive coverage, that there isn't convoluted small print to make sure you are left out to dry if something as expensive as leukemia comes up.

I'd say plan accordingly but really that's just saying "be rich".
