Is Kyle secretly religious???

I don't think that is a fair point. For one, some countries in America and Europe are less religious than others. USA, Canada, UK, and France to name a few. While Christianity is still a main religion, it's not really practiced to its true form. The Bible Belt in the US is not as economically successful as other parts that are less religious today, can you blame that on religion or other factors? South American countries are Christian based and they all (mostly) still suck.

Of course the Middle East is a shit show, and religion does seem like the main cause. But I also think poverty, lack of education and instability plays a role in the shittyness of those countries. Also, when western countries were very religious they also were terrible to live in. A good example is the US with the Salem Witch Trials. But again, I think this is stupid people doing stupid shut, I wouldn't blame it on religion. Christians were too hardcore back in the day, and Muslims are too hardcore now. But I think that will change eventually.
