I mean to be fair, NASCAR inserted the foot into mouth on their own stuff there.
This is just a few of the issues they have suffered since 2020 over race relations/political stances:
Donald Trump is the starter for the 2020 Daytona 500. NASCAR proudly supports Donald Trump! Full fledged support for him as President.
Banned the Confederate flag at races June 10th, 2020. Political reaction to the "George Floyd Protests". Bubba Wallace wears a "I can't Breathe" shirt prior to a race and also runs a Black Lives Matter Paint Scheme during a race. This was driving the Richard Petty Motorsports #43, a reasonable ride for a driver of his talents, more on that later.
A "noose" is found in the Bubba Wallace garage on June 21st, 2020. The FBI investigation later reveals the rope was just tied that way to make it easier to pull down the garage door and had been tied that way since 2019. Bubba Wallace is given special treatment at the Talladega race, with a pre race ceremony event.
Bubba Wallace later in the season is announced as the driver for the #23 at 23XI racing. This was a new team starting in the 2021 season with Michael Jordan and his friend/golfing buddy cup series driver Denny Hamlin as co-owners with a JGR alliance and Toyota cars.
The team was built around Bubba Wallace, and basically started for Bubba Wallace. There's really no way of beating around the bush on this one, Bubba Wallace got a better ride because he was black. Toyota actually was short a seat due to the talented incoming Christopher Bell so they gave up Erik Jones, a younger and more successful driver than Bubba Wallace at all racing levels up until that point.
