The lack of respect and open-mindedness in political discussions may be due to affective polarization, the belief those with opposing views are immoral or unintelligent. Intellectual humility, the willingness to change beliefs when presented with evidence, was linked to lower affective polarization.

A good example of this is Trump's recent call with Georgia's secretary of state.

Trump: "The other thing, dead people. So dead people voted. And I think the number is in the — close to 5,000 people. And they went to obituaries. They went to all sorts of methods to come up with an accurate number. And a minimum is close to about 5,000 voters."

Raffensperger: "The actual number were two. Two. Two people that were dead that voted. And so that’s wrong."

We need a common ground about what reality is in order to adress differences in our viewpoints, but you can't rationally argue with someone who ignores facts. This situation is further amplified by misinformation agents that know how damaging this can be to a society.

The US created the perfect tools for spreading propaganda and misinformation the world has ever seen (social media) and gave them away for the entire world to use as they please. No wonder it's being exploited by intelligence agencies everywhere.
