I’m a former Muslim and I’ll definitely defend the right for women to wear hijab in any form they want, but the burqa is a different story. The vast majority of Islamic scholars agree that the face doesn’t need to be covered, but the burqa is part of a sect that believes women must hide their faces when with non-mahram men or they will be corrupted. A nice American comparison might be the Christian fundamentalists who teach their daughters that they will go to hell if they’re raped, and need to repent and examine their behaviour and clothing to see what caused it. I’ve had this discussion w my friends who still practise Islam, they are pro hijab but not pro burqa.
