Landlord tried to keep more than $800 from our security deposit... Until I threatened to take him to court.

Actually it's not as much to do with the cost of the houses. While that's a factor, I haven't got the time/money to maintain a house either. Nor the money to furnish a house. Nor maintain a yard. Not to mention I don't want to lock myself down quite yet when I'm not sure where I might want to go in the near future. So renting a one bed apartment in a massive complex was significantly more affordable than owning a house, even if I could've gotten a mortgage for the same price. Not to mention that a house that won't be worse than an apartment can't be gotten for less than $400k in my area, and houses would have to cost $100k or less to be as cheap as my rent, after accounting for everything I said above. I don't think people running apartment complexes are why houses cost 400k instead of less than 100k. Renting houses is pretty fuckin stupid, but apartment complexes are just a good service.
