It may not be the norm, but sadly, it can happen and it is scary.
My mom it a T2 diabetic who has never taken insulin (or a sulfonylureas, mentioned below), but has been in this position a small handful of times (over 25 years).
The last was a couple years ago when I woke up in the middle of the night and because her television was on, I went in to say hello. As soon as I opened the door, I knew something was wrong as she was slumped over. I immediately took her blood sugar (it was 52) and she slowly became herself again as after sugary food and drink. I asked her why she didn’t call me or my brother and she said, “I knew I needed help, but I didn’t know what to do (she lacked the mental capacity due to hypoglycemia).
