LAOP was incarcerated and has an infected tooth pulled. A bunch of unproductive trips to the infirmary later, he ends up in the hospital in a medically induced coma, having 3 emergency surgeries and a 30-day stay.

I’ve been to jail for the weekend twice. I have chronic heartburn, nothing too serious but it’s hard to sleep if I dint treat it daily. The first time, I said I wasn’t on any meds so they would only send me to the local city jail at the police station. It’s a high end city and I figured it would be better. On the second day, it hurt worse than I expected, and I rang the intercom to politely ask for an antacid. I got no response, so waited an hour and asked again. Nothing. I repeated about five times. Then I saw though my tiny little window some guards passing and banged on the door. Nothing. The next meal came and I asked through the slot. No response. When I came out and was processed, I told them I’d been trying to get an antacid all weekend. They said “you were on the intercom too much, we had to shut it off.” That’s terrifying. I was young and naive to think anyone would care about some heartburn, but what if I was having a heart attack? I was all alone in there with no way to get anyone’s attention.

So a couple years later, arrested again, I told them I’m prescribed daily medication for heartburn, and they take me downtown to the big city jail. It was freezing cold, I was moved around at random hours of night for no reason, and shared cell with a sequence of people, a guard screamed at me when taking a shower for apparently too long because I didn’t hear the announcement to go back to cells, and still didn’t get any medication until a few hours before I was released.

So if my experience with a few days and a minor issue was that bad, I can’t imagine what people like OP go through spending years in there. I’m so glad LAOP survived his ordeal.
