The word was actually originally applied by the Greeks because they thought it (likely anxiety attacks by their own descriptions) had a physical cause rooted in the uterus, as Greek medicine believed that the Uterus was a freely moving organ in the body and “hysteria” would be caused by the Uterus constricting the lungs. It wasn’t meant to refer to a “crazy woman”, it was a physical condition in which a woman would have trouble breathing for seemingly no other physical reason (again, likely referring to anxiety/panic attacks).

This doesn’t really matter though, because that’s in Ancient Greek. In English, the language it is being used in here, being hysterical means one is irrationally upset to the point of panic. This shows how it is rooted in being an early attempt to biologically explain panic attacks, but today the word is NOT gendered, it just has its roots in the early medical term given to such an episode by the Greeks. If you are offended by the term that’s you overthinking it’s use. When I say someone is hysterical I’m not thinking they’re acting like a crazy woman, I’m thinking they’re panicking themselves into irrationality, which (crazy, I know) is NOT an exclusively female trait and is not what the word means in the English language. I’ve been hysterical before and I’m a man, this is not a gendered term, and I will not change my language to accommodate your ridiculous “natural” association of hysteria with women.
