Latest on World Cup 2022: Tournament is expected to expand to 48 teams, but is not likely to expand beyond Qatar's borders. FIFA Congress to confirm both decisions on June 5.

Idk it’s beyond that already. It’s genuinely evil. I’ve lived there for 3 years back in 2005. Workers are promised decent pay if they migrate to Qatar for work ~ 1.100 euros a month. When they arrive their passports are taken and they’re told ~300-400 month is all they’ll get. These people have families they need to take care of, it is the reason they go to Qatar, they intend to send money back. Think of Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh.

My best friend was from Sri Lanka. He ate rice everyday at lunch, nothing else. I’d give him part of my sandwich but he’d refuse and tell me to enjoy it. He was 21 and I was 11 but he never had an education. I remember going swimming and he had a panic attack because he never had. He was very lucky that his dad was somewhat educated and had some value to the Qatari.

I’ve driven past dead construction workers on the sidewalk as we drove to school. Nobody bats an eye, including the foreman or colleagues. They sleep with 20 people in a tiny room (13-15m2) or tent without air conditioning at up to 50 degrees celsius.

As foreigners you’re absolutely powerless. I remember when my family had enough, we wanted to leave and they took my dads passport. We had to book a hotel for weeks because we already stopped renting our house.

This was in 2005 but I’m sure it isn’t better with a WC coming.
