Lawmakers Push to Replace School Police with Counselors – Maryland Matters

Let me paint you a word picture of my highschool experience and why I belive your premise is flawed from inception.

The year is 2006, airbrushed gangster spongebob tee shirts are all the rage, you get a 5 day suspension if you get caught on campus wearing a jeezy snowman shirt. If you had some beat in your trunk girls would want to ride in your car.

My school cut right through some of the worst parts of town, gunshots from the neighborhood were not uncommon, we only had fences around the football field and the student parking lot. Someone could rip a stolen dirtbike right through the campus with no obstructions, that happened frequently.

Kids carried padlocks on bandannas, knives, brass knuckles, occasionally someone would flash a gun.

Dozens of kids at my school had permanent gang affiliation. This means they either live life in the community with a green light over their head if they leave the gang or they die a gang member. Neither is comparable to bar drunks or rude hotel dipshits.

These kids were in it for life, most times fights weren't some Disney movie jock bullying or hitting some scrawny kid.

It would be several bangers vs one banger or 1 with weapon vs 1 without. Never fair fights, always intended to do the most harm to the opposing gang member. In mere seconds it could go from words to blood on the floor.

This is something that trained professionals aka sros have to be there for.

Teachers and goofballs trying to de escalate a situation that violent will lead to hurt adults or the victim getting unnecessarily fucked up because nobody wants to use force.
