The lazy stoner stereotype is true: Regular cannabis use blunts our motivation

Sustained cannabis use can reduce motivation and ability to feel pleasure, scientists have revealed.

Researchers from Imperial College London have found marijuana use over many years can lower the levels of dopamine in the brain, a chemical which is 'central to learning and motivation'.

Scientists performed detailed analysis of a number of brain scans of long-term cannabis users to come to their conclusions.

Prof Oliver Howes, a psychiatrist at Imperial who led the review, said: ‘We urgently need to better understand how cannabis affects the brain, to help policy makers and individuals make informed decisions.

‘The dopamine system is central to learning and motivation. We conclude that long-term cannabis use in people is linked to blunting of the dopamine system. In this respect cannabis is similar to cocaine or amphetamine, although probably not to quite the same degree.’
