The guy is / was a scientist, and he's a bit laborious and _seemingly_ roundabout in how he speaks in general. And too specific..

He is not saying he won't use preferred pronouns. He's only saying he won't use them if it changes/alters meaning.
like the quote :

He seems like a pedant, not a bigot.

The last bolded thing is not really unreasonable imo.Rules are being rewritten, it's not unreasonable for wanting it be a conversation rather than one sided. (Especially as he's actually irl receptive of said "convincing".)
