Learn To Read Korean in 5 Minutes (seriously)

  • Yeah, I had twenty-two hour weeks for two years as well. It's mentally exhausting. Then you go study for another four-six hours a day and feel like collapsing.

  • We usually learned 60 characters or so every two-three class days but I feel like we only covered about 800 a semester (usually two lessons a week with one day for the characters in a chapter, one for the grammar, and one going over the passages). We probably covered between 3-4K in two years. It still felt way too fast (you could tell who had been at the university longer because they were usually the worst in a class, which was exasperated as the classes gained more Japanese and Koreans). I think only one or two people I started with ended up getting HSK5, though a lot of friends who started in a higher class passed 6. One Japanese guy in our class did pass HSK6 after less than a year though.

  • How big was your class (student-wise)? During my four semesters, ours ranged from about 14-28 students. I definitely agree with you about Anglos struggling the most, that was my impression as well.

  • Your immersion was probably better in Beijing though, I was in Shanghai and everyone speaks English or that awful Shanghainese. Everyone wants to practice their English with you. If I could study again, I would probably go somewhere small (by Chinese standards at least).

  • I'm mostly just curious about your experience because I want the perspective of someone who attended a different university in another city. I was pretty disillusioned with the teaching methods by the time I finished and a lot of my friends just quit halfway through and found jobs in China.
