I want to learn theory, but am less interested in classical applications

I look at music theory a little differently than you do. To me, music theory is a tool for studying the songs that I like. So I'm not thinking "classical theory" or "jazz theory" but rather "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds theory" because that's the song I'm learning right now. Next week it will be some other new-to-me song.

I have two words of advice for you:

  • Find a teacher who has the skill set you hope to achieve. If you want to be a good songwriter, then when you are auditioning teachers, ask for links to their social media, so you can see if you like their songs! If a teacher has a good reputation, but you hate their songs, then maybe they aren't the right teacher for you.
  • Every music theory concept you learn, find an example of that concept in a song that you know and love. Don't think that you're learning music theory so you can dissect old classical compositions. Rather, think of it like you're learning music theory so you can study the songs YOU love! And hopefully to write some great new songs of your own.
