It’s only hypocritical in the sense that he’s functioning as an agent of chinese colonialism and hegemony in his condemnation of Morey. He doesn’t have to speak out about China or condemn China because he’s not familiar with the political situation in Hong Kong—I’m assuming. However, when he condemns, criticizes, smears, and attempts to silence others who are standing up for rights of the Hong Kong people and critiquing Chinese human rights violations, at that point he becomes a tool and pawn that aids and abets Chinese empire. It would be similar to someone in Cuba condemning racialized police violence in the US, and then Cuban nationals telling that person to shut up and let it be. Silencing and smearing others who speak up against injustice does nothing but further occlude and exonerate the human rights violations those who are speaking up are attempting to spotlight.
