Is the left considered liberal?

Using the conventional political compass, yes, progressive liberalism is on the left of politics. This comes as a result of the political compass being based upon the Estates-General of 1789, where those who opposed the Ancien Régime stood on the left of the chamber and those who supported it stood on the right of the chamber.

However, if we were to use the propsed new model of the political compass - which places collectivism on the left of the compass and individualism on the right of the compass - then progressive liberalism would still be on the left; as progressive liberalism is generally a collectivist ideology. That said, progressive liberalism is distinct from classical liberalism, which would be placed on the right of the compass.
