Legal liability if you refuse to take care of elderly parent?

In Canada, 1 case about this reached the BC Supreme Court in 2013, I believe. A neglectful and abusive mother who abandoned 3 of her children tried to sue them years later for 'parental support' under a so called 'filial piety' law that was never enforced but still on the books. The woman had left these kids to fend for themselves and moved herself out of the home. The now-adult children refused to pay and a judge found in their favor and against their mother, stating that to award parental support would cause financial hardship plus the mother had proved herself to be a poor parent and undeserving of support. The BC legislature subsequently scrapped the 'filial piety' law.

Best to check your individual state laws as some laws like this still exist. Most states do not have them though.
