The legal reckoning awaiting Donald Trump if he loses the election: The stakes become much higher for Trump if he loses the election. A raft of legal issues, including a criminal investigation by New York prosecutors, will come into focus in the weeks following Election Day.

Yeah I dunno not wanting to lose power to avoid prosecution is basically a part of every single totalitarian government ever in history. But the crimes Caesar was trying to avoid prosecution of was the literal initiation of the civil war for the purpose of seizing all his power. Trump is basically just trying to dodge tax fraud charges right now.

I just don't think they are substantially similar enough to be productively referenced in that way. I don't think it really adds anything to the discourse about Trump's current transgressions to say Caesar did something kind of similar in some ways once. I think it is much more important to contextualize his behavior in the standards of the modern day and compare his actions to the historical standards of American politics as there is a gulf of much more applicable reference to be made in that regard.
