Legit question

I mean, not really? If you're upper middle class and saving like 20 percent of your income (which is really reasonable considering the US is low tax, food and gas costs relative to Europe), you're looking at two to three million dollars saved at retirement, easily. The cost to treat cancer if you have governmental retirement health insurance isn't going to be more than $600k (that's a really high upper limit, it'd probably be closer to $200k or $300k at the most). That's enough for your spouse to live off of, for end of life care and a bit of inheritance.

If you have a good job with good skills and saving, you're living a good life. But that leaves the other 90% of Americans living a more precarious life than in Europe.
