legitimate question for people here

My sister had a pitbull as a teenager, my mum would not let her keep the puppy knowing the breed so the dog was mostly raised by her boyfriends 60 year old mother (a real saint who worked for DOCS and lost everything she owned over this stupid dog). My sister loved him thought he was just the sweetest, wouldn't hurt a fly etc etc

The dog got out just once and it mauled a poor 5 year old boy walking home from school. Luckily his mother was following along in the car, the boy insisted on walking as the school was around the corner from their house. He was lucky he hadn't died, but did sustain injury to his face.

Just horrible. The only positive was that this attack prompted banning the breed in my state.

My dogs weren't raised on a farm, nor have generations of their parents been working dogs - yet my border collies still do as they were bred to do and like to herd things. Pitbulls just aren't great family pets, trait characteristics can't be 100% trained out and 'raising them well' doesn't guarentee they won't attack.

Pitbulls are also, at least where I live, commonly backyard bred with little to no thought to temperament. Just shitty people trying to make a quick buck. Really very sad, for the families affected by attacks and the dogs themselves (seem to be the most common breed in shelters). Plenty of other wonderful breeds out there, pitbulls should be desexed and breeding banned.
