'The Lego Movie' co-director Phil Lord's Response To The Film's Oscar Snub

It was decent.

I'm not a fan of how the moral changed from "Sometimes you can work things out without violence" to "It's best to be the chosen one and literally as alpha as possible."

I originally was really excited about this new villain that bar none could not be reasoned with, but the way it played out was very disappointing to me.

And I'm just going to say it: Toothless going super saiyan was weaksauce writing. Deus ex machina's are for punks and I would have preferred an ending that didn't use brute force -- maybe Hiccup realizes those fucking antennae are the source of the alpha's power and gets Toothless to blast them to bits, or redirects some magic ice at them... But again, that's not the morale of this story -- the morale isn't to be smart or to talk things out, it's to be alpha. That's why the kinder gentler alpha had to die right after being introduced: even it wasn't the chosen one.

And you know what else bugged me? How lame it was that only Toothless and Hiccup were closely bonded enough to break the alpha's spell. All the other sidekicks must have taken a real ego blow that their dragons never even tried to resist, but again the moral of this movie is be the chosen one and go alpha or go home.

And let's be honest... Hiccup is a great guy, but he lacks all sense of leadership and doesn't even want to be leader because he recognizes he's not qualified for it.

Astrid on the other hand is a natural born leader who shows determination, takes crap from no one but knows when to listen and already has the respect of their people. Oh but wait... she's a girl. More importantly, she's not the son of the chief, and she doesn't have the teeny tiny alpha cat dragon. She is not the chosen one.

Ironically if you accept the ending that means Drago was right after all -- the only way to ensure peace is to have the biggest stick.

A better ending would have been allowing wit and teamwork show how the people - not the chosen one and his army of mindless dragons who follow whoever looks the biggest - can overcome evil and then Astrid should have been made chief with Hiccup as her advisor. And honestly I think that's an outcome they both would have preferred.
