Lengthy explanation of QBR and 3 case studies from this year (Rodgers, Brady, Newton)

I see plenty of reason to immediately discount it. The reason is the one every QBR/PFF/bullshit-statistic supporter tries to dismiss: it just doesn't pass the "eye test".

The fact that Brian Burke is so dismissive of the eye test and so defensive about his stats being questioned suggests he knows they're dubious at best. I also find it hilariously ironic that in his tweet he challenges people to explain how the results of an "eye test" are calculated but won't dare explain how the results of his statistics are calculated.

Here's a test for you. Two QBs played a game, their stats were the following:

QB1: 75% completion rate, 2 TDs, 0 INTs, 275 yards.

QB2: 66% completion rate, 0 TDs, 1 INT, 187 yards.

Who had the better game? QBR says it's QB2, whose team lost by 4 touchdowns. Let's try test number two:

QB1: 74% completion rate, 4 TDs, 2 INTs, 328 yards against the #1 passing defense in the NFL.

QB2: 57% completion rate (12 total completions), 2 TDs, 1 INT, 247 yards.

Again, our winner is QB2, who threw the interception that cost his team the game. Defending QBR is like defending people who claim vaccines cause autism. I know that no matter what I say you folks will just twist all logic and reason to support your beliefs. But it doesn't change the fact that QBR is a nonsense stat promulgated by people riding the Tim Tebow hype train. It's for people too lazy or inept to watch and breakdown game-film who want to sound like they know what the people who watch game-film are talking about.

In your other comments you talk about drawing conclusions on players like Newton and Fitz, but admit that you don't watch the games. No offense, but that's exactly why QBR is perfect for people like you, and why people like you try to make it popular. It allows you to talk like you have inside knowledge of something when in reality you didn't even see the plays happen. It's a bad statistic but ESPN tries to obfuscate their nonsense with layer upon layer of bullshit rather than admit they made a mistake.
