Les confessions comme une anglophone à parler français à Montréal

I moved to Montreal about seven months ago from an Anglo province (NS). I did French immersion for several years in school but that was nearly 20 years ago and I never used it after, so I lost most of it. I’d say I’m definitely more advanced than someone who knows no French but my comprehension from listening is way behind. I try listening to podcasts in French or local French radio but I miss, like, 90% of it. I try to speak French when interacting with a retail or service industry person but once they hear me with my non-French accent or speaking slowly, they usually switch to English, which feels discouraging because I’m trying to practice (and there’s no rush because it’s happened when no one was waiting behind me). I’ve also had the awkward silences if I missed what they said and respond with, désolé, je suis anglais and it alleviates the awkwardness I think. There are some good CBC mini stories on YouTube that involve different interview topics that could maybe help you with the speed? I slow the videos down a tiny bit and put subtitles on after watching one once to make sure I understood it, and put the speed to normal. CBC Rad
